Glaucoma
Did you know 3 million people in the United States are living with glaucoma, which commonly affects people over 60 years of age? Glaucoma is also the second leading cause of blindness in the United States, so early detection is key to preserving your eyesight.
Moshedi Eye Center in Lanham, Maryland specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma – from early onset to further along in disease progression. Ophthalmologist Dr. Emil Moshedi makes it his mission to educate his patients on this condition and how to best treat it for the most effective outcome. Through drops, laser treatment, or surgery, he can manage and, hopefully, cure your glaucoma before it progresses any further.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a silent eye disease that affects the optic nerve and can cause blindness if left untreated. Glaucoma gradually develops as a result of fluid buildup within the eye that increases inner eye pressure on the optic nerve. Patients have no symptoms early on in the disease. Eventually, glaucoma can cause a gradual decline in side (peripheral) vision. In the late stages of glaucoma, central vision may also be affected.
What Causes Glaucoma?
Glaucoma can be inherited. It tends to be more prevalent in African Americans and those with diabetes, sleep apnea, farsightedness, large cataracts, and previous eye injuries or infection.
